artists use "words" to explore and reveal the human experience. artists us=
e "sounds" to explore and reveal the human experience. unfortunately, arti=
sts are frequently discouraged from using the "events" of our media culture=
because of copyright restrictions. it is nearly impossible for media comp=
anies to stop artists from using "words" or "sounds" but they have a very t=
ight grip on the "events" of popculture.

how can we claim to live in a free and open society if we are prevented fro=
m using the "events" of our culture to express ourselves?

i think there should be some kind of compromise.

i would like greater freedom to use the "events" of our culture without hav=
ing to pay for a commercial license to distribute what i create. i would l=
ike media companies to sell a Non-Commercial Distribution License that perm=
its the use and distribution of their content in new and creative ways (e.g=
. school projects, netart expression, etc). i am willing to pay an extra f=
ee for these extra rights but not the thousands of dollars they demand for =
their commercial licenses.
