"The Sandbox is the Lab's way of sharing high-quality video clips with you - for free. Use our clips to make a mash-up, documentary, music video, or whatever!" -- or... ART!

They just made a bunch of US Election-related material available. Pretty awesome!

It's NC, which is fail for a public institution, but better than the BBC which wrote its own NC license.

Any way we could make it better? Artistic expression is one of the primary reasons we're doing this -- NC is kind of a deal breaker, I take it?

My opinion re: NC is that any artistic endeavor is OK -- even if you're selling it in a gallery or elsewhere.

I say this because the vast majority of the time (99% maybe), profit isn't the primary purpose for creating an art work. It's my position that NC should only pertain to enterprises where profit is the primary motive. It's debatable (obviously) but to me it's a simple way to measure it.

Yeah, it’s good to think about what an ideal should be but the facts on the ground can seem a bit murkier. If you are in the US, my guess (and yeah, it’s a guess) is that you might be able to move around the “Non-Commercial” via Fair Use.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

    1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; 2. the nature of the copyrighted work; 3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; 4. and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

    Calling Mark Tribe…

Anyways, regardless of how one thinks about it, I am happy to see people like WGBH trying to get content into artist and activist hands (thanks Brian). Now, if you can copy left some old Bob Vila era This Old House, I might have art project for you.

If we were to meet our eventual goal (as I understand it, don't quote me on this), I believe we'd eventually find all of the content that 'GBH owns online. When that will happen, who knows -- far beyond my powers, I assure you. But someday maybe we'll have the Bob Villa you are looking for and we'll raise you a NOVA. heh
