This new studio space is located across the street from our Computer Labs at 132 W. 21 St. The studio will also feature a workspace with a complete selection of electronic equipment and supplies, as well as carpentry and fabrication tools and equipment. The MFA Computer Art department at SVA was the first of its kind in the United States and continues to lead by producing digital artists of the highest caliber. Rob Castillo and Sukwon Shin won Student Academy Awards in 2004, and alumnus Carlos Saldanha received an Academy Award nomination.  Graduates who focus on digital fine art have exhibited their work at the Guggenheim Museum, Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Whitney Biennial, SIGGRAPH Art Gallery, Ars Electronica, held solo exhibitions at the Picasso Foundation in Spain, Postmasters Gallery in New York, and have received residencies and grants from Eyebeam, New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. The department was recently ranked 5th in the nation in Multimedia/Visual Communications by US News & World Report and Yahoo chose our department site as “One of the Top 100 Sites of 2002” for Best Original Web Art. A complete list of awards can be seen at http://www.mfaca.sva.edu/awards.html

Our educational approach is to develop our student’s creativity through a progressive curriculum, a faculty comprised of well-known artists, curators and working professionals, state-of-the-art facilities and our location in New York City. Students follow a curriculum that is individually tailored to their specific area of interest, and includes studio courses, art history, and programming. Areas of specialization include animation, installation art, interactive media, and digital video, although many students choose interdisciplinary study. Students come from all over the world geographically and bring diverse cultural heritages and artistic influences to their studies. It is expected that graduates of this program will continue in our tradition of excellence and become leaders in redefining the computer art field and be instrumental in charting its future course.
