Artist-in-Residence

  • Type: job
  • Location: East Lansing, MI
  • Deadline: Dec 15 2018 at 4:12PM
Position Summary
Michigan State University’s Department of Art, Art History, and Design (AAHD) seeks applicants for two nine-month residency positions for artists/designers, one in Studio Art and the other in Design (Apparel/Textile/Graphic), who engage critically with issues of race through creative practice. This visiting faculty program invites artists and designers to present a solo exhibition and/or substantial participatory project that is developed and executed during their time in residence. Artists/designers representing a range of practices and disciplines are encouraged to apply, with an emphasis on innovative inter- or cross-disciplinary research.
The positions are open rank (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor-Fixed Term); early, mid-career, and established artists/designers, including international applicants and those seeking research or sabbatical leave are encouraged to apply. Rank of hired candidate will be commensurate with experience.

These positions are explicitly designed to catalyze connections across the department, college, and community in order to further critical discussions of identity on the MSU campus. Of particular interest are artists/designers with a record of work that engages with historical and systemic experiences of the racially marked body, that explores the structural inequalities of the present, or that engages at the intersection of race and gender, sexuality, class, ethnicity or religious identity. Disciplinary orientation is completely open within the broad categories of art practice and design. Artists/designers should be eager to work across disciplinary divides to collaborate with other faculty in AAHD, MSU’s College of Arts and Letters, or other colleges as well as a wide array of students.

Artists/designers will be in residence for the full academic year (August 16, 2019-May 15, 2020), with duties including an exhibition and/or participatory project; a 1-1 teaching assignment that includes a special topics course on critical approaches to race through creative practice; ad-hoc advising of M.F.A. students; and at least one public lecture. Office or studio space and research funds will be provided. Salary is competitive and commensurate with background and experience.

The Department of Art, Art History, and Design’s overall mission is to promote the practice and scholarly research of the most enduring creative media and innovation using the latest technology, theory, and the investigation of rich interdisciplinary intersections. Serving over 500 majors, the department is home to more than 60 faculty and staff, including 28 tenure system faculty members who are committed to active research agendas and creative practice across a range of art and design fields.
