Call for Applicants: Indigenous Artist’s Six-Month Residency at ISCP, New York July 1 – December 31, 2019

ISCP invites professional artists who are First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to apply for a six-month residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York City. This residency will support the development of an Indigenous artist, expand discourses on Indigenous art, and foster deeper international collaboration with New York City and Indigenous artistic communities. This call is open only to Indigenous contemporary artists with Canadian passports, working in all mediums.

ISCP’s international residency program benefits include: 24-hour access to a private 300 sq. ft. furnished studio space; regular studio visits from visiting critics; field trips to museums, galleries and other cultural venues; and participation in artist talks and Open Studios events. Residents are also invited to take part in ISCP’s exhibition program and offsite projects.

Pending full acceptance by ISCP and, separately, by the Canada Council for the Arts, ISCP’s participation fee for six months will be fully covered, and additional allocations to cover individual travel and living expenses in New York City will also be awarded to the successful applicant.

Applicants may seek additional support for an onsite or offsite exhibition project, to be developed while in residence, which will further the awareness and impact of contemporary Indigenous art in New York City.

Application Process
This residency application process will involve two separate steps before final confirmation, as follows.

1. Application to ISCP. Please submit the following to [email protected] by August 20, 2018 indicating “Indigenous Artist’s Residency” in the subject line.

ELIGIBILITY: Visual artists who are First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in all visual arts disciplines are invited to apply. Applicants must be eligible to receive funding as Indigenous artists from the Canada Council for the Arts, and they may not be ISCP alumni or residents in another studio program at the same time as the Indigenous Artist’s Residency.

SELECTION: The selection committee of ISCP reviews applications based on quality, originality and artistic merit. Other consideration factors are: the potential impact of the residency on the applicant, the applicant's past accomplishments, and preparedness to undertake the residency. Studio visits/interviews with the most promising candidates will be held by the selection committee.

One to three finalists will be selected by ISCP. Upon selection by ISCP, these artists will need to submit an application to the Canada Council for the Arts for a Short-Term Project as part of the Creating, Knowing and Sharing program, with ISCP named as a partner organization, by September 21, 2018. Relevant eligibility requirements of the Canada Council for the Arts will be applicable. ISCP staff will review project application, to assist with coordination, at least two weeks in advance of submission, by September 7, 2018. Grants cannot overlap in time with another CCA Short-Term Project grant and cannot be related to activities supported by a Long-Term Project grant. Applicant cannot have outstanding reports due to the Canada Council for the Arts by the time of applying for the Creating, Knowing and Sharing program. It is anticipated that one finalist will be awarded the residency, entirely and exclusively at the discretion of the Canada Council for the Arts.
