Visual Studies is a studio emphasis area in the Department of Visual and Media Arts at GVSU that uses innovative pedagogies to address rich contexts in contemporary art practice. In Civic Studio, Curatorial Studio and Space Studio students design and implement special contexts and engagements to learn about human experience and power. In Time Studio, Interactive Studio and Image Studio students engage the prevalence of digital media and networks in human experience by making and thinking critically about these media. These six courses make up the core Visual Studies BFA curriculum, one of the BFA studio emphasis areas in the Visual and Media Arts Department. Foundations teaching primariy ART 153 Making and Meaning in Art and Design (a foundation course about contemporary practices). Foundations consists of six courses: Drawing 1 and 2, 2D Design, 3D Design, Color and Design, and Making + Meaning. Teaching capabilities in other foundations and studio areas, including Sculpture, Design, Digital 3D, Digital Studies.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• MFA (or comparable degree) with in-depth practice and knowledge in curatorial and spatial (installations) contexts in the creation and presentation of art.
• Familiarity and facility with theory and writing relevant to Visual Studies, New Media, Foundations, and Contemporary Art and Design.
• Ability to organize and maintain a healthy and safe studio environment and manage site-based projects.
• Successful candidates will be able to work in digital media in relation to other studio and intellectual ways of knowing and working. Visual Studies is organized to operate integrally with other visual and academic methodologies within the department, University, and community.
• Awareness and experience in the formation, presentation and critique of culture.
• Teaching capabilities in other foundations and studio areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach three courses per semester in a NASAD accredited undergraduate program with approximately 300 majors. Teaching responsibilities will include Visual Studies courses (primarily Curatorial Studio and Space Studio), ART 153 Making and Meaning in Art and Design (a foundation course about contemporary practices), and other courses as needed: Drawing, 2D-3D Design, Sculpture.

SALARY:
$38,000; nine-month, one-year contract, renewable up to three years.
