RISD Digital + Media is seeking applications to our MFA program

  • Location: Providence, Rhode Island
  • Deadline: Jan 10 2018 at 4:01PM
The Rhode Island School of Design Department of Digital + Media is now seeking applications to our MFA program. The deadline for completed applications is January 10.

Digital + Media is a 2 year MFA program within RISD, which is legendary for training makers within the worlds of Fine Art and Design. Attracting artists from fields such as art, science, technology and sound, Digital + Media engages with students as they develop their unique voice within a supportive environment.

Within Digital + Media, disciplines that have traditionally been divided become fluid and porous. Over the last ten years, the program has established a space at RISD where our graduate students may articulate new questions and interrogate new relationships through their artwork. Within this evolving space, students explore a variety of topics and ask fundamental questions about human nature, knowledge, technology, economics, and geography.

24 hour access is available for the following machinery – 3D scanners, Makerbots, Formlab 3D Printers, laser cutters, CNC Mills, CNC lathes, CNC Routers, Injection Molders and an industrial sewing machine as well as a very extensive range of media equipment—cameras, projectors, sound recorders and more. A variety of work spaces are available, both small private and common areas for constructing large projects or installations.

We have a new sound facility which features a 25.4 channel loudspeaker array for creating immersive 3D sound experiences. 25 independently-addressable speakers are arranged in a hemisphere configuration, accompanied by 4 subwoofers. The new lab provides a space for students to work with a variety of spatial audio techniques. A central computer workstation hosts hardware and software to support composition with digital audio workstations (DAWs) and programming languages. Within the lab is also a flexible seminar area, providing an ideal setting for teaching and learning in sonic arts and sound design.

The program offers financial assistance through assistantships and teaching opportunities, including RISD’s cutting-edge Winter Session teaching model that allows select graduate students to prototype experimental courses. Throughout the MFA, students can access the resources provided by our award-winning career services center and the RISD Writing Center.

RISD’s Digital + Media program is based in the lively heart of downtown Providence, which was named “America’s favorite city” by Travel and Leisure and called “the coolest city in the country” by GQ.
