VIVO Media Arts Centre is looking for an independent media arts curator with a focus on new media practices to develop and execute a curatorial project over the course of 2017. The project will be developed during the the months of June and July and will be presented publicly in September 2017.
The CIR is expected to develop a work plan that reflects their practice, while meeting presentation deliverables established in collaboration with the organization.
The project may include a physical exhibition, a series of events or other public programming components, such as performances, publications, talks, reading groups and lectures, online platforms, or other initiatives depending on the nature of the creative work.
Proposal Guidelines:
Applicants must submit a proposal to [email protected] (subject: Media Arts CIR 2017) with the following:
- a 250-word curatorial statement;
- a 600-word proposal, describing the curatorial framework and its relationship to VIVO’s mandate;
- a current CV for each of the key contributors, including the CIR applicant and participants outlined in the proposed curatorial project (maximum 2 pages each);
- related images/texts as required and a corresponding list indicating the title/description, artist(s) and year of each image/text (PDF or JPEGs, to a maximum of 15 images, or up to 10 minutes of audio or video). For audio-visual material that cannot be transferred by email please provide online link and include instructions for access;
- an itemized budget. Please refer to the funding section below for availability of funds.
Proposals should demonstrate the project’s overall intention and background and are only expected to include pertinent details. Further research and development of the project is expected upon selection and acceptance. Copyright of curatorial work rests with the curator-in-residence. VIVO will require license to present the project and use communications materials for information and marketing purposes.
Funding
The Curator-In-Residence will be expected to produce a project with a budget of $6,000-7,000 CAD. The budget allocation will depend on the organization’s overall funding conditions and the scope of the project. Curatorial residents are paid a minimum curatorial fee of $2,000 out of the total budget and all projects must pay professional fees to participants at above CARFAC/IMAA’s minimum fee schedule.
Selection Process
Project proposals are shortlisted by a jury committee comprised of the Events+Exhibitions Coordinator, an independent curator and a new media artist.
Selected applicants will be contacted by the end of April 2017. The proposals are assessed based on the organization’s mandate and the relevance to the programming direction of the Events and Exhibitions department.

This residency takes place on the unceded Coast Salish Territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
