Birmingham-Southern College invites applications for a tenure track appointment as Assistant Professor in our new Creative and Applied Computing program effective February, 2017. BSC’s planned Creative and Applied Computing (CAC) major, in development for launch fall 2017, will bring the best of our liberal arts educational traditions together with practical core skills required for technology-proficient professionals of the twenty-first century. Our vision is to provide CAC students with the skills of liberal education they will need in the working world - analytical acuity, outstanding communication abilities, critical thinking, and creativity - and technical skills that can be applied to solving problems. In the workplace of the future, having conceptual awareness and practical facility with technology will continue to grow in importance. Our program will position BSC graduates with an understanding not only of the fundamentals of coding but also an informed appreciation for how technological change intersects with legal, ethical, business, scientific, social, and cultural domains, and the background to envision and champion new applications.

The successful candidate will have an aptitude for and interest in participating in the collaborative development of this new program. Candidates should have an advanced degree in computer science or a related discipline, broad scholarly interests, and the creative vision to help us to imagine our new degree program. Responsibilities will include helping to craft and launch the new program in creative and applied computing, ability to offer foundational courses in computing, and collaborating to create new courses. The faculty teaching load at Birmingham-Southern College is three courses each term and an intensive course in the January Exploration term.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and to the liberal arts; the College seeks applicants who show a genuine passion for teaching and scholarly inquiry. Questions concerning the new program and the position may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Dr. Peter Van Zandt at [email protected].
