An "In the Country of Last Things" is curated annually by Emma Wilcox at Gallery Aferro
around ideas of home, urbanism, fear and endurance.
In assembling a disparate collection of artists, many of whom explore Sisyphean tasks or
the suggestion of inorganic fecundity that discarded urban objects hold, this re-curation is
an attempt to own painful experiences of urban life, to tear the house down before anyone
else can. Purchase a copy of Eric Brown and Lori Baker's book of homemade signs after
Katrina and the proceeds will rebuild the houses of those in need.
Utilizing film, installation and the detritus of cities…such as statistical information, the
artists make visible Cormac McCarthy's character's words: "There is no later. This is later."
