THE DISQUIET
Bay Area Currents 2014
Selections by Dena Beard, Assistant Curator, UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive

July 8 - August 8, 2014

Artists' Reception: Friday, July 11, 6-8pm
Artists' Talk: First Friday, August 1, 6.30pm

The Disquiet brings together work by eight artists who reveal ‘undercurrents’ in Bay Area art. An open call to artists collected over 200 submissions that Dena Beard reviewed online before participating in studio visits with finalists. In applying her curatorial gaze to this grand sweep of Bay Area art, Beard identifies the shared artistic pursuit of freedom via creative processes that unnerve and disorient. She says, “The Disquiet stages a subtle drama between the gallery and the world outside. Eight works are cast together in darkness as components of a single identity, the exhibition, but they resound with discordant voices. Purged from the artists and transferred into objects, they form an alien landscape.”
