“RAZZA VESUVIANA” is a project produced by SUDLAB

From 1984 to 1994 the Vesuvius was the prevalent subject of the artistic poetic of Matteo Fraterno (1954, Torre Annunziata, NA). Razza Vesuviana proposes a comprehensive overview of the works created by the artist during this stage of his career, which is an essential phase of his research and that until now those works could have only been experienced by visiting the artist atelier at the Park of the Vesuvius.
The stone and the lava sand, the wood of the broom, the tuff, and the salty water constitute the amorphous material that Matteo Fraterno collects in the area of the Vesuvius creating installations, sculptures and paintings sui generis that the artist than places in his hortus conclusus. By this symbiotic process among nature and the subjectivity of the artist arise: exquisite assemblies of branches of burned broom [Razza vesuviana (Vesuvius Race), 1986]; innocuous lances and daggers decorated with scratches and brush strokes [Lance per il guerriero di Capestrano (Lances for the warrior of Capestrano), 1992]; granular and opaque painting that are made by blends of the pigment of the sand [Esplosione autunnale n° 2 (Autumnal explosion N° 2), 1985]; unstable assemblies of sculptural group that reveal a state of apparent calm "Sculture sismografiche"(Seismographic Sculptures. This corpus of works of art rich of anthropological and existential meanings represent “the moral resistance of the artist against a reality devoted to kaos and to entropy” (Achille Bonito Oliva).

During the vernissage there will be filmed the shoots of the film/documentary
Sul Vulcano – [Vesuvio] by Gianfranco Pannone
