Exhibition Talk: A Postcard from Afar: North Korea from A Distance

Viewing and discussion of propaganda films distributed by North Korea in conjunction with the current exhibition A Postcard from Afar: North Korea from a Distance.

Dr. Charles Armstrong will discuss the context, background, and imagery of several North Korean propaganda films currently on view in the exhibition A Postcard from Afar: North Korea from a Distance, curated by Mark Feary. These films, bought directly from the North Korean government by Feary, will be screened during the event so viewers can see how the DPRK represents their county to the world.

Chares Armstrong is The Korea Foundation Professor of Korean Studies in the Social Sciences at Columbia University. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1994 and specializes in modern Korean, East Asian, and international history. His latest book is Tyranny of the Weak: North Korea and the World, 1950 – 1990 (Cornell, forthcoming 2012). He is completing a history of modern East Asia for the Wiley-Blackwell Concise History of the Modern World series.
