Position Announcement: Chair, Department of Art

We invite nominations and applications for Chair, Department of Art in the College of the Arts at The Ohio State University.

Qualifications and responsibilities, and position availability:
We are looking for someone with excellent leadership and advocacy skills who can help us build on our strengths, identity, and vision and relate well to a variety of constituencies inside and outside the university. We are a discipline-based program that also sustains and fosters a diversity of research interests and interdisciplinary practices. We seek an individual who is comfortable discussing ideas and working in a collaborative environment.

The chair facilitates the planning, coordination, and evaluation of departmental programs, serves as an advocate for the department and its accomplishments, and encourages collaborations with internal and external partners. Guiding faculty and staff in ways that support and advance their professional development is especially important. In addition, the chair’s other primary areas of responsibility are fiscal and facilities planning and development, recruitment and retention, fund raising, and personnel management.

Candidates must hold a terminal master’s degree or higher or an equivalent combination of education and experience as well as demonstrated abilities in leadership and administration. University-level teaching experience and a strong record of creative/studio activity are expected, qualifying for the rank of associate professor or professor with tenure. Applicants with additional documented activity in the visual arts, including theory and history, are welcome. Salary and other considerations competitive and consistent with the commitment to recruit the best-qualified individual. The position reports to the Dean of the College of the Arts and begins July 1, 2005.

About the Department of Art, Ohio State, and Columbus, Ohio:
The Department of Art is currently organized into seven areas with strong sensibilities and expertise: painting and drawing, sculpture, ceramics, glass, photography, printmaking, art and technology. The graduate programs in sculpture and ceramics were recently ranked #7 and #8 by U.S. News & World Report. The department offers BFA, BA, and MFA degree programs. Undergraduates benefit from expanding Honors and research experiences. Most graduate students in the department are funded with a full tuition waiver and monthly stipend through a Graduate Teaching or Administrative Associate position. The department has 24 full-time faculty, including 3 who teach at the regional campuses, and 8 staff, with approximately 350 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students. Numerous development funds support juried competitions, materials awards, internships, scholarships, residencies, visits to artists’ studios, and other opportunities to enrich the student experience. In addition, through the Ann Hamilton/Michael Mercil Visitor Series and other initiatives, the Department of Art is host to national and international visiting artists.

The department is one of seven academic units in a comprehensive College of the Arts that also includes Art Education, Dance, Design, History of Art, Music, and Theatre. The college’s Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design is an interdisciplinary research and development center in computer animation, motion capture, and emerging technologies in interactive/multimedia. The university’s Wexner Center for the Arts, a multidisciplinary, international laboratory for the exploration and advancement of contemporary art, presents exhibitions, screenings, performances, artist residencies, and educational programs.

The Ohio State University, a world-class research university, is ranked 22nd among national public universities by U.S. News and World Report. Its Columbus campus has a faculty of about 3,000 and a student population of about 48,000, including 9,500 graduate students. Columbus, the state capital is the 15th largest city in the U.S. Its rich and varied cultural life in the visual and performing arts includes the Columbus Museum of Art, the Short North gallery district, symphony, jazz, and chamber orchestras, a ballet and opera company, and equity/community theatres. The Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council have strong national reputations.
