The Lower East Side Printshop is pleased to announce the Editions ‘11:
CATALOGUE LAUNCH and EXHIBITIOn, with a launch party and reception for artists on Thursday, May 26. The exhibition will be on view at the Printshop from May 26 – July 6, 2011. With a catalogue essay by renowned critic and independent curator Nancy Princenthal, the publication and exhibition feature new works created by recipients of the Printshop’s Special Editions Residencies: Saul Chernick, Blane De St. Croix, Marie Jager, and David Opdyke, and recipients of the Printshop’s Publishing Residencies: Arturo Herrera and Chris Martin.
The Special Editions Residency provides emerging artists with the opportunity to create an important new body of work in collaboration with a master printer, fully sponsored by the Printshop. Saul Chernick, Blane De St. Croix, Marie Jager, and David Opdyke have all broadened their artistic practice by immersing themselves in printmaking. Their new works demonstrate outstanding artistic vision and delight in exploring a new vocabulary.
The Printshop's Art and Editions Committee awarded two Publishing Residencies in 2010-11, inviting Arturo Herrera and Chris Martin to collaborate with the Printshop’s printers on a new body of work. The two outstanding artists used this opportunity to experiment with new materials and mastered at creating major new works.
The collaborating printers, James Miller, Studio Director/Master Printer, Aurora De Armendi, and Erik Hougen, all excelled in the art of collaboration and facilitated the artists’ vision with great care and expertise.
 
About the Artists
SAUL CHERNICK (b. 1975, New York, NY; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) received his MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and his BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has exhibited nationally in galleries, museums, and cultural institutions including The Aldrich Museum, CT; Franklin Art Works, MN; the Bronx Museum, NY; and The Jewish Museum, NY. He has held residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Arad Arts Project in Israel and is represented by the Meulensteen Gallery (formerly Max Protetch).
BLANE DE ST. CROIX (b. Boston, Massachusetts; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and BFA from Massachusetts College of Art. His work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions that include Smack Mellon, NY; Future Arts Research, AZ; Socrates Sculpture Park, NY; and Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, MD. He is the recipient of awards granted by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the West Collection, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and has held residencies at Art Omi, Yaddo, Henry Street Settlement, Artist Alliance Studio and the VLA Art and Law.
ARTURO HERRERA (b. 1959, Caracas, Venezuela; lives and works in Berlin, Germany) received his MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago and BFA from the University of Tulsa. His work has been the subject of national and international solo and group exhibitions. Select exhibitions include Haus am Waldsee, Germany; Galleria Franco Noero, Italy; the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Ireland; Galería Helga de Alvear, Spain; and Galeria Fortes Vilaca, Brazil. He is the recipient of numerous fellowships granted by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, DAAD, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and his work was the subject of Art21, a documentary series about contemporary visual art in the US. He is represented by Sikkema Jenkins & Co. and public collections include the Museum of Modern Art, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, TX; Museum of Contemporary Art, IL; and the Miami Art Museum, FL.  
MARIE JAGER (b. 1975, Copenhagen, Denmark; lives and works in Los Angeles, CA) received her MFA from the University of Southern California and MA from Institut d’Éudes Politiques de Paris. Her work has been included in national and international solo and group exhibitions among them the Hayward Gallery, UK; Art in General, NY; Artists Space, NY; Henry Art Gallery, WA; MAK Center for Art and Architecture, CA; Drei Raum, Germany and her work was selected for the 2006 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art, CA. Jager is the recipient of grants from The Durfee Foundation and Fotokem/University of Southern California.
CHRIS MARTIN (b. 1954, Washington, DC; lives and works in New York, NY) received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts and attended Yale University prior to coming to New York. Select exhibitions include Mitchell-Innes & Nash, NY and Germany; Zurcher Studio, NY; Saatchi Gallery, UK; Edward Thorp Gallery, NY; Envoy Gallery, NY; Bravin Lee Programs, NY; and forthcoming the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Martin is the recipient of fellowships from the National
Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He is represented by Mitchell-Innes & Nash and public collections include The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC; The Museum of Contemporary Art, IL; and The Nerman Museum, KS.
DAVID OPDYKE (b. 1969, Niskayuna, NY; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) received his BFA from the University of Cincinnati. His work has been widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at venues including the Wright Museum of Art, WI; Ronald Feldman Fine Art, NY; Krannert Art Museu, IL; David Weinberg Gallery, IL; International Print Center of New York; and forthcoming the Museum of Arts and Design, NY. He has held residencies at Yaddo, Dieu Donné Papermill, Marie Walsh Sharpe Studio
Program and produced commissioned projects for The City of New York Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program and Niskayuna High School in Niskayuna NY. Opdyke is represented by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts.
About the Essayist
NANCY PRINCENTHAL is a renowned critic and independent curator who has written extensively on contemporary artists. She received her MA from Hunter College and BA from the University of Pennsylvania. Longtime contributor, and formerly senior editor of Art in America, she is also a contributor to Artforum, Art News, Art on Paper, The New York
Times, among other publications and co-authored the recent book After the Revolution: Women who Transformed Contemporary Art. She is on faculty at Princeton University and has served on the faculties of Yale University, the Rhode Island School of Design, New York University, and the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. She also held the position of Assistant Manager of Printed Matter soon after its founding.
