In Between

IN BETWEEN: DISPLACED HARMONIES / DISSONANT STATES

In January 2010 Pécs assumed its role as a European Capital of Culture. The city entered a realm of the in between: inhabiting latitudes of transition, travelling from the past through the present into tomorrow’s uncertainties. With an abundance of cultural events, normal routines can be altered by instantaneous and unexpected experiences; in these moments the city-dweller or tourist can be caught off-balance.

Within this framework of increased activity, the exhibition IN BETWEEN: DISPLACED HARMONIES / DISSONANT STATES enters territories that explore the unpredictable and temperamental relationships connecting ‘the event of art’ and the spectator. Taking place from September 23 through October 7 in distinct locations throughout the city, the exhibition is a continuation of projects which expand artistic praxis into imaginative discursive and synergetic environments. Whether at odds with or searching for areas of compatibility or modestly seeking a liminal space, the form and type of work evolves beyond the vocabulary or label of a particular practice but situates itself within spheres of unsettling possibilities.

To facilitate its different methods of enquiry and representation, the curators of IN BETWEEN: have chosen venues not easily categorised: an empty space in the city’s main bus terminal, an office building vacant for twenty years, or the concrete frame of a former ice cream parlour. In the context of these recontextualised structures, as well as the familiar exhibition space, Pécs, the capital of culture, enables expanded spheres of public expression and interaction.
