Faculty Position in Digital Arts

The Department of Telecommunications of the Grady College and the Department of Theatre and Film Studies of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia invite applications for a tenure-track position in 2D Digital Arts to begin August 15, 2014. The position is funded through the President’s 2013‐2014 Interdisciplinary Hiring Initiative.

Position Description

The Departments of Telecommunications and Theatre and Film Studies jointly seek to hire an Assistant Professor with expertise in 2D animation and digital effects for video games, film and theatre. This is a tenure-track appointment: the candidate will share teaching responsibilities between the two departments. The ideal candidate will have a program of creative research in the area of digital visual communication and will be able to teach students both the theory and production of digital animation and visual effects specifically 2 and 2.5 dimensional animation and effects.

The Department of Telecommunications has a strong team of faculty in game-design, interactive narrative, and film and television production; and the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, in animation, interactive digital performance and film studies. This specialist in 2D animation and digital effects would strengthen and complement UGA’s existing programs while enhancing the University’s national and international profile in the emerging area of research, creativity, and teaching in game innovation and digital production.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop his or her own creative and/or research agenda, as well as develop new courses in digital arts. In addition, the candidate will play a leading role in the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts Digital Laboratory, engaging in creative activities with faculty and collaborating on interdisciplinary grants.

Qualifications

MFA, Ph.D., or equivalent terminal degree in Digital Media, Communications, Art, Theatre, or any related field is required at the time of appointment (August 2014). Candidates should have a demonstrated record of creative work and/or scholarly research and the potential for excellence in teaching. The ideal candidate will have a record of accomplishment in 2D animation with demonstrated theoretical, historical, and creative perspectives in experimental and conventional forms. Awareness of video game visual styles and experience in 2D and 2.5D representation in video games or digital simulations, along with knowledge of traditional drawing, film or animation production techniques highly desired. Areas of expertise may include film and video production and visual effects, video games, and data visualization. Successful candidates must be able to serve on graduate student committees and have the ability to direct theses and dissertations.
