Richmond VA’s 1708 Gallery invites artists working in all media and disciplines to submit proposals for InLight Richmond 2014, 1708's 7th annual public exhibition of light-based art and performance. InLight 2014 will take place on Friday, November 21 in Monroe Park, one of Richmond’s most historically significant public spaces. The juror for InLight 2014 is Denise Markonish, Curator at MASS MoCA.
Proposals should involve, be inspired by, investigate, or interpret themes of light, from light as medium to light as concept. Additionally, 1708 encourages artists to propose projects that respond to and engage with the site.
The geographic and architectural features that characterize Monroe Park and its surrounding streets—pathways, walls, sidewalks, green spaces, trees, benches, statues, building facades, and more—also mark the intersection of Richmond’s social, political and cultural memory.
In addition to technical and production support, an honorarium of $300 will be given to each project. All projects are eligible for the Best in Show Award ($1500), the Most Environmentally Conscious Award ($1000), and the People's Choice Award ($500).
Monroe Park is a dynamic and expansive site with a long history. The Park is five-sided with crisscrossed pathways that form a radial pattern from the center. It features a fountain and the Checkers House, a round-house in the middle of the park so named for the frequent checkers games that once regularly took place there. There are monuments to Confederate General Williams Carter Wickham and Joseph Stewart Bryan, a journalist and civic leader in Richmond in the late 19th/ early 20th century, and a memorial to veterans of World War II. Recently the park has received a lot of attention as the community begins to contemplate and decide on its future role within Richmond.
The deadline for submissions is midnight (EST), July 20, 2014.
