Early Approaches of Performativity

Symposium

The symposium addresses the performative aspect in the productions of Joseph Beuys, Bazon Brock and Wolf Vostell, showing the ways in which performance is realized by the three German postwar artists. What possibilities are there for the documentation, contextualization and museum presentation of performative forms of expression? The contri- butions by Siegfried Zielinski, Ursula Frohne and Christian Katti, Sven Lindholm, Petra Maria Meyer, Monika Schmitz-Emans, Christoph Zeller, Bazon Brock and many others, throw light on the three artists’ Actions by way of common themes that depict the common features and differ- ences in their modes of artistic self-expression and interaction with the viewers.

With the exhibition Beuys Brock Vostell the ZKM deepens its thematic focus on performativity and participation.
