CALL FOR WORKS IN ALL MEDIUMS

Submission deadline: March 30th , 2014

Space Debris is a newly opened New York based art space located in Karakoy, Istanbul. Karakoy is one oldest districts of Istanbul and has crucial standing with its central location and historic texture. It has become the central art district with the growing number of galleries and art museums in the area.

Space Debris aims to bring a fresh artistic nuance to the neighborhood, with its emphasis on experimental, new media works in contemporary art, working within the notion of an art collective.

The April exhibition “In Exile” will feature different artists from New York and Istanbul and we also hope to open up submission poll to those who are interested in this notion as we share this concept with the community.

“In Exile” will be a group show looking at the exile not only in the notion of that word in a political sense, but the of the exile in a state of mind, being and understanding. Separation as an emotion is one that we feel very early on in life. This exhibition will center around the ideas of separation of ourselves in our physical and spiritual location. By using objects that have a significant meaning to them, we will ask each contributing artist to attach a sound to the item. By culling from artists in New York City and Istanbul, Turkey, the items will be documented in their voyage and history from its origin to its arrival at Space Debris art space. This voyage will serve as material for a sound composition to be recreated as a sound installation and will be performed during the opening night. The narrative flow of the show will follow how we come to an understanding of where we are as people, what the notion of home means, and how our language may not have the adequate words to express where our feelings of being are in an exiled universe.

Specifications: The objects in question and pieces may be anything that carries and a place for the artist. Each piece must have an accompanying sound, either attached to the object or as an mp3, aiff, or wav on a CD. These objects will be played during the opening show.

Submission deadline: As for the sound objects, paintings, mixed-media, video works, and sound installations are also welcomed within the theme of exiles. Submissions are due March 30th..
