Assistant Professor of Culture and Politics

The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor with a focus on culture and politics. The position will start in Fall 2014. We seek candidates with research expertise in visual culture or new media who have demonstrated background in cultural/social theory as it relates to global politics. Regional specialization and disciplinary field are open, but an international component is required. Applicants whose research overlaps with one or more of the following areas are especially welcome: religion and politics, human rights, migration and mobility, transnational social movements, or critical security studies.

Applicants should have substantial research accomplishments, an ambitious research agenda, and exceptional promise as a scholar. The search committee will also evaluate applicants’ teaching record and potential for excellence in teaching. Preference will be given to applicants with the Ph.D. in hand, substantial progress towards publication of a first book and/or articles, and teaching experience.
The teaching load is two courses per semester, at the graduate or undergraduate levels. The appointment is attached to the Culture and Politics (CULP) undergraduate major within the School of Foreign Service (SFS). CULP is the second largest major within the SFS and emphasizes transnational/global topics that inter-relate cultural identity and questions of power and authority in society. The SFS offers a rigorous four-year undergraduate program in international studies, as well as several master’s degrees in area studies, security studies, global human development, and international affairs.
