Outcasting – BBC Residency / Making the News

Outcasting is working in collaboration with BBC Cymru Wales to offer an exciting residency for moving image practitioners in the News & Current Affairs department which is based in Llandaff, Cardiff.

News and Current Affairs is the biggest department in BBC Cymru Wales producing dozens of hours of programming every week. Working in Welsh and English on Television, Radio and Online, journalists and programme makers across Wales bring the most important stories of the day and bigger issues facing the nation to the living rooms, cars, computers, workplaces and smart phones of the people of Wales and people across the world.

Through news programmes such as Good Morning Wales on BBC Radio Wales, Newyddion 9 which is broadcast on S4C and online through www.bbc.co.uk/news/wales/, their news services are viewed by two thirds of adults in Wales each month.

The successful applicant will be attached to the Health News Correspondent who works bilingually across TV, Radio and Online. The resident will have 5 days of access whilst the correspondent prepares a story for broadcast which is likely to include going out filming, recording interviews, preparing graphics, writing copy for online, editing etc. They will then shadow the correspondent on the day that the story is broadcast as they move from studio to studio from early in the morning (usually 06:30) to possibly 21:30 at night (for the Welsh language ‘Newyddion 9′).

The correspondent often films his own content on a Sony Z5 cameras and records audio for Radio on a flashmic but will also use a ‘crewed camera’ for some interviews.

The selected artist will make their own response to that story or to how the media interprets or relates that story by recording and filming. The artist will need to have their own camera and recording kit, public liability insurance and will need to comply with BBC confidentiality and copyright guidelines.

The final film will then be presented on Outcasting / BBC Wales Online and also be screened at O:4W Film Festival 2014.

The selected artist will receive;
£2,000 fee to include all costs.
5 days of access to the BBC News team during their day-to-day work.
