Dream the World Awake

Walter Van Beirendonck: Dream the World Awake is the first major international event to be presented at RMIT Design Hub.

In the autumn of 2011, the Antwerp Fashion Museum presented the inaugural retrospective exhibition of the work of the Antwerp designer Walter Van Beirendonck. This compelling presentation now travels to Australia courtesy of the philanthropic leadership of Naomi Milgrom AO – an Australian business leader, philanthropist and passionate supporter of leading design, architecture, arts and scientific initiatives.

Over the last three decades, Van Beirendonck has built up an impressive international career. He can be seen as a maverick of Antwerp fashion and is primarily known for his colourful collections, spectacular Paris fashion shows in the 1990s, his innovative W.&L.T. label and the wide range of images of the body that he has brought to the catwalks. His work combines diverse sources of inspiration, ranging from technology, fine art and pop culture to ethnographic sources.
