DARMSTADT PRESENTS KYKLOS ENSEMBLE APRIL 30 at SECRET PROJECT ROBOT
Darmstadt "Classics of the Avant Garde" series is proud to present the Kyklos ensemble and their newish rendition of Stockhausen's Tierkreis, or Zodiac, a 12-movement work (one for each star sign), originally performed in 1975 on fabricated music boxes. Kyklos has arranged the piece for its rock-inspired, woodwind-enhanced sonic palette. Also on the program are works by Ligeti, Gesualdo, and Lopes. Come early and stay late for "rigorous" DJ sets by Nick Hallett and Zach Layton.
The concert is being held as part of Astral Projections, an exhibition of video sculptures hosted by Brooklyn gallery Secret Project Robot. Kyklos will be preceded by Nick Hallett, who will demonstrate a multimedia performance table created for Meredith Monk's Our Lady of Late as part of the exhibition. Throughout Kyklos's set, projections created by the video sculptures will create a unique visual ambience.
Kyklos is an sextet of guitar, bass, percussion, clarinet, sax and accordion. The group performs improvisations, originals by composers in the group, some commissions, and arrangements of composers such as Stockhausen, Ligeti, and Messiaen, also integrating video, dance, and visual art from time to time. They have performed at Philadelphia's Kimmel center and the f(x) music marathon in Miami.
