Tasmeem Doha is a biennial international design and art conference held in Doha, Qatar. For the past seven years, Tasmeem has gathered and engaged scholars, students, community members and practitioners to discuss and scrutinize critical issues in design and art. The 2013 Tasmeem conference will take place March 10-17 under the theme hybrid making.

The creative making of art and design is essential to any society that is actively transforming itself sustainably. How does the field of art and design organize its scope, processes, and critiques of creative making to ensure its effective support of sustainable social and material transformations? One promising notion is hybrid making; an integrated approach to knowledge, creation, and contextualization that incorporates offerings from a diverse and dynamic set of disciplines that includes the physical and social sciences, the arts, and the humanities.

To examine the nature and capacity of hybrid making in context, Tasmeem Doha 2013 is a conference-centered material and conceptual exploration. Much of this exploration will be related to the context of Qatar, especially its capital city, Doha. This small energy-rich nation is the site of an emerging economic, social, and material transformation that is beginning to earnestly negotiate the role of art and design as a critical resource for envisioning and guiding sustainable changes that can harmonize, enrich, and interpret the new aspects of everyday living.
