ACM CHI 2013 Workshop on Evaluation Methods for Creativity Support Environments

Creativity refers to human processes that underpin sublime forms of expression and fuel innovation. A 2005 NSF workshop saw development and evaluation of creativity support tools as a new field. By now, researchers have developed sophisticated methods. Creativity support environments (CSEs) address diverse areas, including software, hardware, embodied interfaces, instrumented spaces, networked topologies, and mobile devices. CSEs may involve temporal-spatial dimensions of collaborative work, requiring evaluation methods addressing synchronous, asynchronous, co-located, and distributed interaction. They may involve everyday information.

We will gather a community of researchers developing and evaluating CSEs, to share approaches and develop best practices. We seek papers that develop in-depth methods for CSE evaluation. Methods must be explained with sufficient clarity and detail that others can apply them. They should be grounded through study of particular CSEs. Authors should motivate the types of CSEs for which a particular evaluation method is well suited.

The workshop will coalesce community involved in developing these methods, inspiring discussion and debate about the value of particular methods in situated contexts. The outcome will not be a single prescription, but rather an ontology of methodologies, with consideration of how each maps to creative activities, and an emerging consensus on the range of expectations for rigorous evaluation of CSEs.

Papers should be 2-4 pages (HCI Archive Format). The best will be invited for presentation.

Workshop will be held at ACM CHI 2013 in Paris, France on April 27 or 28, 2013.
