ATHENS SLINGSHOT Call for Artworks

Call for completed or proposed new works to be presented during Athens Slingshot, March 8 and 9, 2013, in Athens, GA. The event highlights non-traditional art forms: interactivity, new genres, social media, performance, sound, sited works and locative works, especially works integrated with the urban environment. Slingshot is also accepting fixed media (video and sound). Artists from across the country will present work in a wide range of indoor and outdoor venues within a 3 block area of downtown Athens.

ATHENS SLINGSHOT, the new showcase for music and innovative art in Athens, Ga, takes over downtown on March 8 and 9, 2013. Spread over two-nights and three city blocks, Slingshot spotlights local bands and national acts in the music capital of the Southeast, and presents boundary pushing artwork throughout the urban environment. Slingshot also features industry talks with prominent producers, promoters and media companies, mobile recording units documenting the performances, and much more.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE (online): November 15, 2012 (Midnight, Eastern Standard Time)
NOTIFICATION: December 15, 2012
EXHIBITION: March 8 and 9, 2013

Limit 1 submission per artist or artist group.

Proposals are invited in one of the following categories:
• Installation (any media)
• Performance (any media)
• Locative Media
• Fixed Media (video)
• Fixed Media (sound)
• Other

While emphasizing non-traditional forms, Slingshot is accepting unusual fixed media video and sound works. "Fixed Media (video)" means SD or HD digital video for LCD screens or HD projection, with up to 5.1 surround sound. "Fixed media (sound)" means sound works for 1 – 8 channels in a cube configuration. Fixed media works are intended for a mobile audience (not seated) who may enter and leave at will in the middle of a work, and may be programmed in a series. Fixed media works that do not fit these descriptions should be submitted under another category, such as "Installation" or "Other," as appropriate.

SUBMISSIONS: A completed submission consists of the completed online form (see below), including a URL documenting the proposed work, and URL(s) where the CV(s) of the artist(s) in PDF format can be downloaded.

DOCUMENTATION: Documentation/recordings of completed artworks or renderings/simulations of proposed works should be submitted as a single URL. Appropriate media for documentation include photography, audio, video, renderings, simulations and technical drawings. Documentation must be concise, clear and of high quality. Excerpts are appropriate for longer works. Note that material will be viewed on an LCD screen and in stereo audio only. You may specify if headphones are required.

SITES: Artworks will be presented in a wide range of indoor and outdoor venues within a 3 block area of downtown Athens. Artists should describe the type of site required for their work on their proposal. A complete list of available sites will be made available at a later time. Proposals may be made for specific sites as the sites become public. Artists may contact [email protected] with any questions, and we will try to answer them.

EXHIBITION DURATION: Most works will be scheduled for a single night, though some works will be scheduled for two. Certain works of indeterminate duration that do not require security may be on exhibition for a longer period. Artist’s should specify duration requirements.

INSTALLING WORK: Artists are responsible for installing and de-installing their own work (except for Fixed Media works).

FUNDING: Slingshot cannot promise any funding for the selected artworks or artists, but Slingshot will support efforts by the selected artists to obtain funding. Limited in-kind support may be available for certain selected works. Any costs for shipping, transporting, installing, de-installing, or insuring artworks or artist's equipment are the responsibility of the artist. Every effort will be made to protect artworks during the exhibition, but Slingshot cannot be held responsible for damage.

PROMOTION: Slingshot is committed to promoting selected artists. Every effort will be made to document work for the artists and include selected works in the national promotion campaign.
