CALL FOR A COLLECTIVE EXIBITION
a project of FKL (Forum Klanglandschaft) - The Rad’Art Project / Artéco association

THE HISTORY OF “AURICOLI”:
15 years ago, in 1997, we organized an exhibition called “AURICOLI DA RUMORE” and we invited some artists and designers, to send a contribution, an object, a piece of handicraft, to participate on it.
We asked them to imagine a device which could defend us from excessive noise or sound, as somehow similar to the sunglasses that defend us from excessive light: we asked to imagine something like an accessory, a nice object to be worn.
The exhibition was realized at Firenze, as part of a festival of experimental music and art named “INCONTRI MUSICANICI”.
After 15 years, we want to start again with this project. So we are publishing a new call for participation, since we are convinced that sound pollution is still a hot topic.

Here is our new call for participation:

AURICOLI DA RUMORE: THE CALL:

There are many ways to defend us from too high an intensity of light, the most popular is the use of sunglasses.
This is a very common object, which initially was maybe just a useful object, but, with time, has become a “vanity object”, habit, vice, and many famous stylists started designing them. However, undoubtedly, defending ourselves from too intense light is a real need,
and, sometimes, a matter of surviving.
Now, in these last decades, especially in our cities, there is another sense organ, which is subjected to an excessively strong stimulation: our ears.
The reports about the acoustic pollution in our cities are worrying, and the limitations to the intensity of noise which the laws impose, are indiscriminate and generally not sufficient to defend us adequately from the dangerous consequences.
It may be necessary, thus, to use a device which provides a filter to sounds, as the sunglasses filter light.
It could become also necessary and urgent to design such devices not only considering their usefulness, as in the case of the ear muffs which defend the workers from acoustic stress, but also considering their “design".
They could be a precious and fashion object, which could be worn with pride, pleasure, enjoyment.
Starting from the vision of such a possible future, we are proposing to everyone interested in collaborating, to design or build an object which can be used for this purpose: defend our ears; objects with different shapes, with different filtering degrees for different needs.
We will present these purposefully designed and built prototypes in an exhibition in December 2012 at Rad'Art (Mercato Saraceno), and we will publish the full collection in a “catalogue”, which will also explain the sense of this operation.

FKL and Artéco reserve the possibility to organize, with the collected materials, further exhibitions, in Italy and abroad.
AURICOLI DA RUMORE is a metaphorical operation: the objects we will exhibit, even if they actually work, won't be easily wearable at this moment. By simulating such a need, and designing such an object, we mainly intend to make us think about the existence of a real problem.
We wish to point out that we are not asking for a technologically efficient object: we are staying within a symbolic and poetic universe.
The sunglasses defend us from sunshine, which is a natural thing, and cannot be eliminated.
The Auricoli da Rumore, instead, should defend us from acoustic pollution, which is a typically human problem, and we wish that its solution will follow also different and more radical ways.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Please, send your work (objects, prototypes, projects and/or photos), together with a short explanation and a short curriculum vitae (in digital support, preferably Word), to this address within 09.30.2012,

giving your name, the title of your work, a very short presentation and a very short curriculum.
At the end of the submission process, you will find a paypal button: in order to participate in "auricoli da rumore" exhibition and catalogue, you have to become a member of Arteco Association paying a membership fee of 20 euros. Both FKL and Artéco are absolutely no profit organizations, and each project of them needs the support of the participants.
