Rhizome is seeking an Executive Director. Founded in 1996, Rhizome is dedicated to the creation, presentation, preservation, and critique of digital art. This is an exciting opportunity to engage a new generation of artists, institutions, and donors. Rhizome is a mid-size nonprofit with four full-time and two part-time staff, and is affiliated with and based out of the New Museum.

The Executive Director oversees and develops all fundraising and artistic programs, and is a steward for Rhizome’s community, including artists, membership, and all supporters. Together with its vibrant community, its staff and the Rhizome Board, the Director’s role is to strategically plan for and anticipate the evolution of the organization.

The position requires a deep familiarity contemporary art, as well as an awareness of current trends and developments in technology. The Director is the lead on all organizational development, managing corporate partnerships, foundation and government grant-giving, individual giving, and earned income initiatives, like the annual Benefit. In collaboration with Rhizome’s talented staff, the Director oversees the development of the website (rhizome.org) and artistic programming including signature programs such digital art preservation and the annual commissioning of new art.

The Director produces and presents major events, like the annual Seven on Seven Conference, and serves as as a public representative of the organization and is actively involved with speaking, writing and advocating for this dynamic and emerging field of practice.

The following are prerequisites for the position:

[text=left]–A thorough, in-depth understanding of contemporary art and media art, their histories and current manifestations, including new media, internet art, gaming, creative applications of mobile devices and the like.
[text=left]–A comprehension of the internet and new technologies both to position Rhizome within the current technology community and to assist Rhizome's Director of Technology on technical decisions.
[text=left]–Strong relationships with artists, non-profit organizations, and communities central to Rhizome’s mission.
[text=left]–Experience with large-scale event production, conference planning, and curatorial projects.
[text=left]–Previous history of fundraising, administration and management of an organization.
[text=left]–Prior experience managing full-time, part-time staff, fellows and interns.
[text=left]–Excellent writing and editing skills.
