Corey Helford Gallery is proud to present “Por Vida”, a solo exhibition of new works by much sought-after Los Angeles artist Sylvia Ji. For her first solo show in Los Angeles, Ji presents a series of acrylic-on-wood panel portraits that explore her fascination with morbid beauty. Known for painting alluring and mysterious women, Ji’s new body of work is a dark celebration of life, death and renewal. By incorporating symbols of death into her paintings, she transforms her subjects into powerful, seductive and dangerous temptresses. Ji’s style continues to evolve with the introduction of different color palettes, ornate decoration, and intricate illustration. Open to the public, the reception for “Por Vida” will take place on Saturday, February 23 from 7 to 10pm, and the show will be on exhibit until March 15, 2008.

Sylvia Ji was born in 1982, and raised in San Francisco, California, where she received her BFA at the Academy of Art University. Upon graduation, she relocated to Los Angeles in 2005 where she currently resides. Ji’s work encapsulates an alluring beauty that is both cutting edge and a nod to time-honored technique. Her paintings are symbolic reflections of herself, portraits of people she knows or just nameless faces set in a landscape of fleeting and decaying beauty. Ji’s work has been featured in several gallery exhibitions including White Walls, Thinkspace, Lineage Gallery, BLVD Gallery, and Art Basel’s Art Fair Now. She has been profiled in numerous publications such as Juxtapoz, Trace, and Mesh Magazine. For more information about Sylvia Ji, please visit sylviaji.com.
