Rhizome Commissions Program

Since 2001, the Rhizome Commissions Program has provided 45 emerging international artists with financial resources to realize new projects that engage technology. Works created through the Rhizome Commissions program represent the most timely ideas and practices in media art. Since 2003, Rhizome has celebrated the commissions with an event at the New Museum, a special opportunity for the artists to share their final projects with a large, broad audience.

2009 Commissions

In 2009, Rhizome awarded nine emerging artists. Seven grants were determined by jury and two were selected by Rhizome's membership through an open, online vote.

The 2009 commissions jury included Barbara London, associate curator of media art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; Oliver Laric, Berlin-based artist and creator of the arts-centered website VVORK.com; Emma McRae, co-curator of the Melbourne-based arts festival Experimenta; and Rick Rinehart, digital media director & adjunct curator at the Berkeley Art Museum. The jurors were joined by Rhizome's curatorial fellow Luis Silva and executive director Lauren Cornell.

Funders

The Rhizome Commissions program is supported, in part, by funds from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Greenwall Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Additional support is provided by generous individuals and Rhizome Members.
