LOCATION: Harvestworks

Please join the Volumetric Society @ Harvestworks presenting an evening of exciting developments and demonstrations from our three featured speakers.

Allison Berkoy will discuss recent projects in developing participatory multimedia installation environments that use the Kinect and Processing. Berkoy explores the unique capabilities of these tools in constructing environments, performances, and the role of narrative in live art experiences.

Berkoy, a New York based artist works with mixed-media installation, performance, and the projected image. Her spectacles have appeared inside galleries, music venues, theater stages, eateries, garages, a train caboose, and a salvaged lightship. Berkoy received an MFA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Electronic Arts, an MA in Performance Studies from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and graduated from Northwestern University’s Theatre program. She has taught at Pratt Institute and New York City College of Technology (CUNY).

Don Undeen is the Manager of the MediaLab at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The mandate of the MediaLab is to explore the impact that new technologies can have on the museum experience. The MediaLab recognizes that most valuable resource for fulfilling this mandate is the incredible energy and generosity of New York’s creative technology community.

At this presentation, Don will be talking about various initiatives the MediaLab is undertaking to involve the NYC tech scene in an exploration of culture and technology. He’ll be sharing some completed projects, works-in-progress, and showing how easy it is to get involved.

Sean Kean will present Meet the Voxiebox - the world's first holographic game system. Utilizing volumetric display technology, the Voxiebox is uniquely capable of generating light in a volume of space so that 3D content is viewable in 360 degrees for multiple players without using special glasses.

Pioneering a new era of post-screen entertainment the Voxiebox gives game developers and enthusiasts a remarkable new platform to unlock their imaginations with digital graphics that appear in physical 3D. Unlike screen based 3D that relies on pixels, or picture elements, to display imagery - Voxiebox is the first commercial system to give developers access to write voxels, or volumetric picture elements, on a 3D grid in space.

Sean Kean is the founder of the Volumetric Society of New York. He is passionate about simplifying complex technology in order to make expressive tools more accessible to others. He has been programming well enough to be dangerous for more than 20 years. Sean is a cofounder of VOXON, the manufacturer of the Voxiebox.
