For the first time ever, Eastern Bloc is partnering internationally, with Casa Tres Patios in Medellin, Colombia, to offer a residency exchange opportunity to a Colombian artist wishing to travel to Canada to produce work at Eastern Bloc, and eventually for a Canadian artist to travel to Colombia to produce work at C3P.

Applicants are also encouraged to take into consideration the local network of art centers, hacker spaces, media labs, and community organizations (both in Medellin and Montreal) that might feed into the residency process. The host organizations, Eastern Bloc and Casa Tres Patios, will facilitate exchange and dialogue between the resident artist and local networks. Examples of such networks include:

In Medellin: Labsurlab, Co-operaciones, Unloquer, Platohedro
In Montreal: RCAAQ, CQAM, LabàLab, Fablabs QC, Foulab

Please include in the project description how the proposed project responds to the following criteria (the artistic merit of your application will be judged based on these criteria):

Presents critically engaged content
Exploits the material framework and conceptual parameters of the mediums and technologies used
Use of multiple platforms/systems/networks and/or use of open source technologies
Explores current trends in digital culture
Investigates the digital language and its norms and structures
Looks to build upon or challenge the normative structures of New Media art production and exhibition

The selected artist will benefit from a 5-week production residency in the Eastern Bloc Lab (21 April – 25 May 2014), followed by a public presentation of the project completed during the residency. The resident artist will benefit from the following services:
Open access to the research & production lab
Guided technical assistance during the 6 week production period (provided by the Lab Coordinator and/or a lab volunteer)
Access to the lab’s equipment and tools (click here for detailed list of lab equipment and tools)
Access to small storage space for materials and personal equipment
A maximum of 10 hours of in-gallery technical assistance for the installation and dismantle of the project before and after the presentation period

The selected artist is required to give one workshop, on a related subject, in the lab (open to Eastern Bloc’s members and the general community); as well as give an artist talk (open to the general public) about the project created while in residency. The selected artist will receive a total fee of up to $3000 CAD for the residency, divided as follows:
