Imagination + Innovation for Ocean Sustainability

Inspired by the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project, Blue Trail is a “trail” of ten interactive art-design-science-tech installations that will take place along the San Francisco waterfront during the final races of the international America’s Cup sailing challenge in September 2013.

Calling all artists, designers, techies and ocean experts!

Join us for this high energy day of art-design-science-tech collaboration to generate concepts for Blue Trail.

Blue Trail is a trail of 10 commissioned interactive installations that will take place along the San Francisco waterfront during the final races of the America’s Cup sailing challenge in September 2013.

Each installation will be created by a different interdisciplinary team (must include an artist or designer and an ocean expert) and offer a unique and imaginative way to engage the public in the mystery, beauty and fragility of the world’s oceans.
Up to five concepts from the competition will be considered for commission.

Ocean Experts to Speak at Design Jam
Blue Trail welcomes three outstanding ocean experts as presenters and advisors at the Design Jam.

Dr. Terrie Williams: Marine Biologist at UC Santa Cruz’sInstitute of Marine Sciences and Co-founder UCSC Center for Ocean Health

Barbara Benish: Advisor to the United Nations Safe Planet Campaign, Director of Art Mill and an environmental artist

Sarah-Mae Nelson: Ocean Literacy and Conservation Specialist at Monterey Bay Aquarium

TO PREPARE

No formal preparation is needed. However, we recommend you educate yourself as much as possible about issues related to ocean sustainability, particularly these three initiatives:
-Keeping plastics out of the ocean
-Preserving marine sanctuaries
-Promoting sustainable seafood

We also suggest you familiarize yourself with the vision and mission of Blue Trail, particularly our curatorial goals as described on our website: www.bluetrail.us. Also, you may want to "like" our Blue Trail page on Facebook, where we post an ecclectic mix of art, design, science and ocean information.

CREATING TEAMS
You may come with people with whom you want to collaborate. Or you can join with others at the event to form a team. In any case, each team must have an artist or designer and an ocean expert.
You may come with an idea for an interactive installation that you want to pursue or wait to see what emerges at the event.

REGISTRATION
Online registration ends 5:30 pm on Friday, October 26. If space is still available, tickets may be purchased at the door. Check here for an update on the 26th.
Space is limited. If we are sold-out, you will be added to a wait-list and notified when a space has opened up. You will have 5 hours to purchase your ticket from that time.
