Job Description:

FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary: Commensurate with experience and education
Partial year, 40 hours per week August-May annually

Oversees all aspects of running two university art galleries by identifying artists for exhibition; planning, coordinating, installing and executing exhibits in contemporary art; working with the gallery committee of faculty advisers to determine programming and gallery activities; scheduling exhibitions and programs; interacting with museums, galleries and artists; planning and participating in installation of art works.
Publicizes galleries by serving as the galleries’ representative and spokesperson, overseeing gallery publications, gallery website and press releases, speaking before community groups; marshaling cooperative support from a range of stakeholders internal and external to the university, including financial supporters and donors
Participates in fund raising activities by cooperating with the in-house financial development officer in initiating and soliciting funds; identifying grant opportunities and writing grant applications; establishing goals for the University Galleries; reporting on fund raising and donor activities; and collecting and analyzing data to recommend strategies
Establishes educational programs by offering student, staff and public exhibition tours; identifying potential visitors’ interests; creating a platform for advancement and outreach of the university in visual arts creativity
Conserves TCU resources by preparing and overseeing the gallery budgets.

Teaches students in one or two courses per year by conveying information; establishing and adjusting course outlines and objectives; scheduling and assigning instructional activities; assessing student learning; providing instructional feedback; coaching, counseling and disciplining students; planning and appraising results

Maintains staff confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications.Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

The Art Galleries at TCU include the J.M. Moudy Gallery on campus and Fort Worth Contemporary Arts (FWCA), an off-campus satellite gallery. FWCA extends TCU's committment to exhibit innovative contemporary art and to present programs and events by leading contemporary artists. the 1,300 square-foot Moudy Gallery is primarily a teaching gallery, with an established schedule of changing exhibitions of student work. FWCA is dedicated to contemporary, in-house initiated exhibitions and public programs of a regional, national, or international scope. FWCA has 2,200 square feet of exhibition space plus an administrative office, storage, and prep space.

Job Requirements:

Curates all aspects of TCU art exhibitions in the university art galleries by selecting art for display, organizing, publicizing and installing exhibitions, researching artists and art work, overseeing publications, gallery website and press releases, offering student, staff and public exhibition tours, and administering financial affairs of the art galleries, including grant writing and fundraising.

Required: Bachelor's degree in art history, studio art, or a related field. A master's degree in art history, studio art, or a related discipline is preferred. Three years' experience in gallery or museum curatorial duties, management experience and demonstrated experience as curator-of-record of contemporary art exhibitions, programs and events. University gallery experience is desirable. as well as fundraising and grant writing experience. Skilled in some or all components of Microsoft Office; Microsoft Windows navigation skills; knowledge of department specific software; knowledge to train, evaluate, mentor and supervise for-credit student staff and paid student staff; knowledge of university-level teaching; knowledge of international contemporary art, art history and theory; knowledge of presentations and public speaking techniques, knowledge of gallery design, methods and practices; ability in grant writing and fund raising; ability to organize innovative, curatorial projects of reputable distinction in contemporary visual arts; ability to marshal cooperative support from a range of stakeholders, including university students, faculty, staff, administrators, financial supporters and donors; ability to develop and implement educational programs; ability to clearly communicate verbally; ability to draft grammatically correct correspondence.

Applicants have proven aptitude in innovative, experimental curatorial projects of reputable distinction in contemporary visual arts; experience as curator-of-record of contemporary art exhibitions/programs/events with responsibility for planning, coordination and execution; demonstrate success in collaborative efforts and an ability to marshal cooperative support from a range of stakeholders including university students, faculty, staff, and administrator; and financial supporters and donors. Successful candidate will have the ability to work with the gallery student workers and graduate assistants as a mentor, offering hands-on training. The candidate must demonstrate his/her ability in grant writing and fundraising.

Gallery Curator reports to the School of Art Director. With the assistance of the SoA Director, Gallery Curator recruits and supervises employees; plans, monitors, and appraises job results for 1 full-time employee and 6-10 undergraduate and 3-4 graduate students.
