The Art Department in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Graphic Design, commencing September 2014.
The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate classes in Graphic Design. Teaching load is between 12-18 credit hours per year (6-9 per semester), commensurate with level of scholarly and creative productivity. Additional duties include student advising, maintenance of office hours, curriculum development, senior project reviews, recruitment and general department activities including committee work.
The successful candidate will demonstrate passionate engagement in her/his own practice, research, scholarly activities and creative work. The Art Department emphasizes conceptual and aesthetic innovation while encouraging student-centered pedagogy.
-MFA degree in Graphic Design/Graphic Communication
-Substantial portfolio of published/displayed and client-commissioned creative work
-Demonstrated understanding of theoretical and critical aspects of graphic design
-The ability to work effectively with diverse groups
-Reputation within the graphic design field with publications and/or creative work, citations, reviews, awards or other recognition
-Strong understanding of typography
-Three years of full-time graphic design teaching experience at the college level AND minimum four years industry/commercial graphic design experience in the field
-Broad knowledge of graphic design, design history, design process and contemporary design issues
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills
-Solid understanding of photography, web design and illustration as those fields apply to art direction and graphic design
-High level of technical proficiency with current digital media and graphic design applications and programs
-Web design skills a plus
