2 x 2 Solos is a series of solo exhibitions featuring new work commissioned from four accomplished emerging artists based in the Oakland/Bay Area.

Jacqueline Kiyomi Gordon’s installation for 2 x 2 Solos is inspired by the architecture of the gallery and its proximity to Frank H. Ogawa Plaza. Attached to the windows lining one half of the gallery space, tactile transducers resonate the glass with sounds recorded from around the Plaza, defying the structural barrier dividing outside and inside space. Cutting through the center of the gallery is a transparent wall that acts as both a sonic barrier, splitting the visual experience from the audible and creating a second space to house an acoustical sculpture of felt and aluminum.

About the Artist: Jacqueline Kiyomi Gordon creates objects and installations that alter physical experience with the goal of creating new concepts in acoustical understanding. The bi-city artist - splitting her time between the Bay Area and Los Angeles - received her MFA from Stanford University. She has recently shown at di Rosa, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Berkeley Art Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and Cue Arts Foundation in New York. 2 x 2 Solos is Gordon's first solo exhibition in the East Bay.

About the Curator: As a curator Amy Cancelmo is interested in presenting work that addresses current social issues and creates opportunities for dialogue, learning and critical engagement by all participants. A recent graduate from San Francisco State University, she has a Master of Arts in Queer Art History. Cancelmo's recent project Strange Bedfellows is a nationally traveling exhibition and catalogue exploring collaborative practice in queer art making. She is currently the Exhibitions & Events Coordinator at Root Division.
