Color has historically been used as a descriptive, evocative and phenomenological element in visual art. A parallel history exists of color as an industrial product, used to predict fashion and decor trends or to effect phycological states. Industrial printing processes and digital technologies codify and granulate color into a standardized vocabulary. This class will examine color as a readymade. Through lectures, exercises and short projects we will look at artists who appropriate color and develop student?s ability to utilize this strategy in their own practice.
Anthony Ryan received his MFA in Printmaking from San Francisco State University and his BFA from SUNY Purchase. His prints and paintings have been exhibited nationally including at the MH deYoung Memorial Museum and at the Nueberger Museum of Art. He has taught at the Academy of Art University and California State Summer School of the Arts. A 2006 recipient of the Murphy Graduate Fellowship in the Fine Arts from the San Francisco Foundation, Anthony was be a Graduate Fellow at the Headlands Center for the Arts in the Spring of 2009.
