WHALES SING, BONOBOS SIGN
(DISCUSSION)
John R. Buck and Shane Savage-Rumbaugh

John and Shane will present their experiences with animal communication.

John studies how humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins and leopard seals
use sound to communicate underwater. He'll present examples of the graphical
techniques scientists use to visualize the sounds of these animals.
Shane is a painter who grew up communicating with bonobos (chimps) using
lexigrams. He'll discuss
his experiences as a nonscientist interacting with bonobos, and how it
informs his
artistic practice. John teaches Electrical and Computer Engineering
at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Shane teaches Studio Arts at Stonehill College.
