ONLINE SLIDE SHOW:
GLOBAL DOUBT: AMERICAN, BRITISH AND ITALIAN FLAGS IN THE TOILET
Are Western democracies the new Evil Empire? And if so, what flags are they waving? This is the theme of Lanfranco Aceti’s latest exhibition, Global Doubt, at The Toilet Gallery in Kingston - London. Till the 27th of August visitors will be able to admire these flags, which Mr. Aceti has suspended over the toilet seats.
The flags shown to the public are a reinterpretation of the Nazi flag mixed with the contemporary national flags of America, Britain and Italy.
Global Doubt focuses on the issues of imperialist Western democracies, globalization and the social structures of individuals and communities.
It offers to visitors the possibility of seeing the images of Bush, Blair and Berlusconi, literally going down the drain.
We asked the artist, “Is this just a provocative attempt at Brit Art or something more?”
”I wanted to question whether the certainty of democratic superiority is a mirrored image, the distorted echo of racial superiority… And also give people the possibility of watching their leaders going down the drain…” he said.
Through the use of national flags the exhibition explores the issues of authoritarianism, participation, freedom of speech and human rights in post-modern technological societies.
Aceti is a Ph.D. candidate and researcher at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
The artist will meet the press and the local community for public talks at The Toilet Gallery. The exhibition can be accessed online at http://www.communart.com
